This Ice Dam Conditions Report is designed to give a historical view of when environmental conditions favorable for ice dam formation may have occurred. Ice dams are created when snow melts on a roof and becomes trapped by dams of ice at the roof's edge. This water can back up underneath roofing materials and into the house structure. Not every property will develop an ice dam given the exterior conditions, but for properties that have suffered water damage due to ice dams, this report gives information on when favorable environmental conditions may have occurred.

This report uses minimum daily temperature and local snow depth estimates to identify time periods where ice dams are a risk factor for roof and structure damage at properties with inadequate insulation and/or poor ventilation.

The temperature data is from the Global Historical Climatology Network - Daily. The local snow depth data is from the Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) operated by NOAA National Weather Service's National Operational Hydrologic Remote Snesing Center (NOHRSC). SNODAS is a modeling and data assimilation system developed by NOHRSC to provide the best possible estimates of snow cover and associated variables to support hydrologic modeling and analysis. SNODAS estimates incorporate snow data from satellites, airborne platforms, and ground stations with model estimates of snow cover.

The data are stored as gridded files covering the continental United States at a 1 km spatial resolution and a 24 hr temporal resolution. SNODAS data are not suitable to snowfall events or totals for specific regions.
